In regards to the Bulb Tee project, i have two questions. First, the interior and exterior deck units are not the same. The exterior unit is slightly shorter on the outside. Can they all be the same width of 6'-3" for ease of production? Second, the plans call out 1 3/4" diameter smooth bar for the bearing assemblies which will require 2" holes in the bearing hardware assemblies. Is this correct, or can we assume the use of the MDT standard of 1 1/2" diameter smooth bar with 1 3/4" holes in the bearing hardware?

The width of the exterior beam can be increased to match that of the interior beams.
Use the MDT standard of 1 1/2" diameter smooth bars with 1 3/4" holes in the bearing hardware.

The note at the bottom of the culvert summary states all RCP is to be C wall. As per ASTM C506, RCPA (arch pipe) is not available in C wall. Is it safe to assume the C Wall designation is intended for only round pipe?

Use Reinforced Concrete Pipe and Reinforced Concrete Box produced by a precast plant listed on the QPL.
Use Wall B for all RCP and RCPA pipe. Replace Special Provision 51 with the following:
51. REINFORCED CONCRETE PIPES, BOXES, INLETS AND MANHOLES - LOW SULFATE SOILS
Use a maximum water-cement ratio of 0.45 and a minimum design compressive strength of 4500 psi (31 MPa) for all reinforced concrete pipe and reinforced concrete box culverts.

Please post the Geopak design files and any additional geotechnical information available for the project.
Answer
Submitted: Tuesday 24-JUL-2018 10:45 AM
The design files for the requested project are posted on the MDT FTP site for your use at: GEOPAK FILES
The requested files do not represent the staked project, but are only design files. The Department cannot guarantee the accuracy of the electronic data, particularly as it may be called up by your computer, nor does any data in these files supersede the data in the contract documents.
In addition, the Department will not make any revisions to the electronic files pertaining to the staked project, change ordered work, or changes that are made during construction to fit field conditions.
Attached are PDF Files of the available project alignment and/or structures geotechnical report(s), geotechnical report supplements, and geotechnical laboratory summaries. There is remaining geotechnical information that is voluminous and very difficult to compile in a concise manner. Contractors are welcome to come to MDT Headquarters to inspect rock samples taken for the project that are stored here or to look through the complete set of Geotechnical field investigation notes, laboratory testing, analytical, or other data in our project files. It should be noted that the project may have undergone significant changes during the design process after the original geotechnical report and supplements were issued. Thus, some of the information contained in these documents may be out of date or not applicable with regard to the advertised project. Some of the changes include, but are not limited to: Project splits (for funding, ROW issues, etc.); alignment and grade changes; and changes due to environmental factors (sensitive areas, etc.). The documents can be found at: GEOTECH FILES

1) I do not see the Cover-Type 2 Quantities shown anywhere in the summaries?
2) There is a discrepancy between the bid item list and the summaries for curb. The Summary shows curb and gutter, and the bid items list shows valley gutter.
Answer

1. Cover Type 2 will be deleted from the Schedule of Items by addenda.
2. Gutter-Conc Valley will be deleted and Curb and Gutter-Conc will be added by addenda.

1. On Sheet 13 of Jct US 2 South Project, are the concrete rail road crossing panels existing?
2. Would a cold pour joint seal such as DOW 890 SL be permissible for sealing the joints on the 9" PCCP? This could result in a cost savings to the department.
3. According to the contract documents, the area averages 28 Freight trains per 24 hour period at 70 MPH. Even if the trains are slowed down, we have concerns about the 9" Concrete Pavement around the tracks during pouring and curing. The vibration of the trains could cause cracking in green concrete and/or segregation during placement. Based on the design shown, we don't believe this can be the contractors responsibility. What is MDT's plan for mitigating and who is responsible cracking if it occurs?
Answer
Submitted: Wednesdayday 08-AUG-2018 01:00 PM
1. There are 4 total crossings at this location, 2 have existing concrete surfaces and two are being updated to concrete surfaces via a crossing surface agreement associated with the project. The new crossing surfaces should be in place prior to the roadway work.
2. Use joint seal material that meets the contract requirements.
3. Pour concrete is accordance with the plans. Any cracking will be addressed if they occur.
