Please post any additional geotechnical information for this project.
Answer
Submitted: Monday 10-SEP-2018 11:41 AM
Attached are PDF Files of the available project alignment and/or structures geotechnical report(s), geotechnical report supplements, and geotechnical laboratory summaries. There is remaining geotechnical information that is voluminous and very difficult to compile in a concise manner. Contractors are welcome to come to MDT Headquarters to inspect rock samples taken for the project that are stored here or to look through the complete set of Geotechnical field investigation notes, laboratory testing, analytical, or other data in our project files. It should be noted that the project may have undergone significant changes during the design process after the original geotechnical report and supplements were issued. Thus, some of the information contained in these documents may be out of date or not applicable with regard to the advertised project. Some of the changes include, but are not limited to: Project splits (for funding, ROW issues, etc.); alignment and grade changes; and changes due to environmental factors (sensitive areas, etc.). The documents can be found at: GEOTECH

The special provisions 53.c.1 Requires a dry fit-up of the entire precast bridge structure and sub structure in the manufacturing plant. Since there is a cast in place section in the abutments 4' wide and therefore no support for the middle precast slab may the two halves of the bridge be set up independently and without the middle slab?
Answer
Submitted: Tuesday 11-SEP-2018 12:55 PM
The entire precast bridge superstructure and substructure is to be dry fit as per the special provisions. Temporarily shore the middle slab over the 4-ft cast in place section as needed to accomplish this.

In the fill slope portions of the project the existing slopes are approximately 1.5:1 or 2:1 and the proposed newly constructed slopes will also be 1.5:1 or 2:1.
What is MDT's stance on the compaction requirements for the fill material over the existing slopes?
Is it MDT's intention to have the entire slope meet a compaction requirement?
If compaction is required on the entire fill, the fills would need to be "benched" into the existing, consolidated material to accommodate compaction equipment. This would be a major operation and may cause more harm than good to the existing, in-place soils, it also would not seem practical considering the narrow roadway prism to have these fills constructed by the end of the shift to reopen the highway to two-lane, two way traffic.
Can the fills be consolidated using tracked machinery and/or roller bucket and be exempt from specific compaction requirements?
Answer
Submitted: Tuesday 18-SEP-2018 10:31 AM
In areas requiring new fill depths of 2 feet or less (when measured perpendicular to the existing ground line), compaction may be accomplished using tracked equipment as directed by the Project Manager. All other cases require construction of fill slopes as specified in Subsection in 203.03.2 Embankment, C. Preparation of Embankment Foundations.

Special Provision No. 42, (Scaling) requires temporary rockfall protection. There are no specifics for this. Please clarify how this will be paid for.
Answer
Submitted: Wednesday 19-SEP-2018 09:58 AM
The temporary rockfall protection in SP #42 is specific to non-work hours from areas designated as scaling areas in the plans and/or areas scaled for worker safety to prevent damage to adjacent facilities. This protection is up to the Contractor to provide and plan for as required in the scaling plan submittal. No extra measurement and payment is made for temporary rockfall protection, it is incidental to the cost of scaling hours.

1) With restricted width in the underground utility conduit installation area may the contractor use signaled 24-hour single-lane two-way traffic control till the utility conduit installation is complete?
2) Will MDT please consider adding a bid item for positive barrier for the underground utility conduit installation?
Answer
Submitted: Wednesday 19-SEP-2018 10:00 AM
Submit a traffic control plan in accordance with Subsection 618.03.2. The department will consider and may potentially accept a plan that utilizes temporary signals. Please reference section 618.03.8 in regards to vertical edges near the edge of the travel lanes. Utilizing positive barrier to protect traffic is a method that may be necessary depending upon the contractors means and method.
