Please advise how the pay item limits were determined for the special backfill? The plans show 2:1 excavation but also include a note stating "excavate as needed."
Answer
Submitted: Wednesday 24-OCT-2018 01:05 PM
After further review it has been determined there is an error in the Special Backfill quantity. Quantities are estimated based on the 2:1 excavation coming up from the foundation dimensions shown in the plans. The "Excavate As Needed" note on Plan Sheet 10 allows the Contractor to excavate as needed to provide a safe working environment and achievement of all culvert installation and compaction requirements based on its means, methods and operations. Therefore, the Method of Measurement has been revised. A revised Special Provision 27. SPECIAL BACKFILL FOR CULVERT is linked below. A corrected quantity for Special Backfill will be added by addendum.

1) This project requires removal and reset of 200ft of guardrail over the top of the culvert being replaced. I believe these are concrete posts. Does the MDT still want them to be reused?
2) If there is existing curb over the culvert, will it be replaced through the section removed for excavation?
3) Is EB & WB identified backwards on Sheet 9 as there is no guardrail in the WB lanes at the culvert and EB would not be running north at this location.
Answer
Submitted: Tuesday 23-OCT-2018 04:31 PM
1) Yes, reuse the existing concrete posts.
2) Yes, a bid item and summary frame will be added to the contract for CURB 4 IN-CONCRETE by addendum.
3) Yes, EASTBOUND and WESTBOUND are incorrectly labeled on Plan Sheet 9.
