What grade, species and type of lumber is required for the 1x6x16' wood slats also known as face-boards? All other snow fencing throughout the state is currently built and maintained with rough sawn #2 and better rough sawn Douglas Fir.

1)  This quantity of full threaded bolt made and melted in the US currently doesn't exist and are 14-16 weeks out on order, would the state consider a non-domestic bolt due to the time frame before NTP?
2)  Would the state consider going back to the 8d, 12d, and 16d nails as drawn out in the detail drawing 607-30, rather than switching to screws as stated in Special Provision #18 line C(1)(2)(3)(4)? Domestic screws are hard to come by and are generally 6-8 weeks out on order. A collated screw would be ideal, but we can only find those in non-domestic. I strongly feel that the use of screws would create additional time and labor and will significantly increase the cost of this project.
3)  What grade of #6 rebar is required for the anchors?
4)  When would the state have the project staked and locations established for site visits? Does the state have the names and phone numbers of the landowners in which these sites are located?
Answer
Submitted: Friday  24-MAY-2019 03:22 PM
1)  Follow the requirements of Subsection 106.09
2)  The Special Provision will not change; screws will be required.  Follow the requirements of Subsection 106.09
3)  Grade 40 or better rebar.
4)  Project staking will be done after the letting.  Use the plans and mile posts to determine locations. Landowners contact information is given on the attached document.

1)  Is Canadian imported lumber acceptable as long as it is accompanied with a grade stamp or mill cert?
2)  Does the 5/8 bolts and 3/8 j-bolt packages have to be galvanized or can they be common? The detail drawings do not clarify coating.
Answer
Submitted: Wednesday  05-JUN-2019 9:00 AM
1)  Follow the lumber guidelines in Standard Specification 607.02.1.  There is no requirement for American lumber.
2)  MDT specifications do not require galvanizing for the 5/8 or 3/8 bolts.

In regards to the concrete snow fence, is the state anticipating a relatively flat location for this installation or will the contractor be expected to grade a smooth pad for the concrete to be placed?
Answer
Submitted: Wednesday  05-JUN-2019 9:10 AM
Contractors are encouraged to visit the sites to determine the site conditions as outlined in Subsection 102.06-Examination of Documents and Site of Work.  Grading will likely be required for the concrete snow fence installation.  If the contractor disturbs more the 1 acre, a SWPPP permit will be required.

Since the bolts do not need to be galvanized can the screws be untreated as well? That way the entire fence can rust out together in a couple of years.

Answer

The screws in Special Provision No. 18,  8 FT WOOD SNOW FENCE SUBSTITUTIONS will remain as specified.

In the special provisions #16 (Concrete Snow Fence) paragraph A, it states that the contractor will provide all equipment, labor, and transportation of all materials necessary for the use of salvaged and stock piled materials. Does this include transportation of the salvaged concrete guardrail posts, and if so, where are they being stock piled? Does the state have equipment to load the concrete posts where they are being stockpiled?

On the plan specific detail page for the anchor system it calls for a #6 rebar which is 3/4" in diameter.  on that same line in parenthesis it has written - 7/32" DIA.  What is that number in reference to? Does the rebar need to be 3/4" or 7/32" in diameter?
Answer

The rebar is a 3/4-Inch #6 bar.
