Federal designations include Congressional High Priority Corridors ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CANAMEX_Corridor ) deemed important for interstate travel, while others are considered recreational. The United States Forest Service designates Scenic Byway's ( http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/r1/specialplaces/?cid=stelprdb5116110 ), whereby the Bureau of Land Management designates Back Country Byways (http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/prog/Recreation/recreation_national/byways.html ).
The state of Montana has several designators; the Montana Legislature, the Montana Transportation Commission, and the MDT Director. The Montana Legislature recognizes the following highways or sites; Historic, Veteran Memorials, Heritage Trails, and Highway Patrol Officers.
